The Extinction Principle of Diatomite Matting Agent
Gloss is the reflection of light on the surface of an object, and the gloss of the surface of an object is closely related to the roughness of the surface of the object. When the light hits the surface of the object, part of it will be absorbed by the object, part of it will be scattered and reflected, and part of it will be refracted. The smaller the roughness of the surface of the object, the more light is reflected and the higher the gloss: vice versa. If the surface of the object is uneven, the more light is scattered, resulting in a decrease in gloss.
Diatomite matting agent products are suitable for water-based coating systems, added to the coating material formulation, used to reduce the gloss of the coating film, belongs to the field of coating additives. The absorption of light by the coating film mainly depends on the coating base material value or emulsion properties. When the coating ratio is basically determined, the preparation of coatings with controllable surface gloss, namely high-gloss coatings, reflective coatings or matte coatings, is mainly realized by adjusting the effect of the coating surface on light scattering, while the scattering effect of the coating on light mainly depends on the matting agent that can effectively produce microscopic roughness of the coating surface. The extinction effect of the coating surface is divided into physical extinction and chemical extinction. Chemical matting achieves low gloss by introducing light-absorbing structures or groups into the coating, such as some polypropylene graft species. Physical extinction is through the addition of matting agent, so that the coating film forming process in the surface of the micro roughness, increase the scattering of the coating surface and reduce reflection. The matting effect can therefore only be produced if the particle size of the diatomaceous earth is sufficient to produce a corresponding micro-roughness in the coating.
The following Yuantong diatomite series matting agents meet the needs of water-based coatings with different gloss requirements
